  6. Boil the milk and the vanilla essence in a sturdy pot
  7. When the milk boils, add slowly to the egg yolks-sugar mixture,  while continuously  whisking
  8. Return this mixture to the burner and simmer on low heat
  9. Add the cornflour and cook until the mixture becomes thick. This may take up to 7 - 8 mins.
  10. Pour the custard onto the set jelly.
  11. Arrange the sliced apples on top if required.
  12. Once cooled, return to the fridge. Chill until set.

Add the apple juice to the fruit in the pan, and bring to a simmer. Trifle was the first dessert I learnt in my home science cooking classes.
